Restoring Cherokee Culture

Cherokee, NC

Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation

Profits from Tribal enterprises are helping the tribe increase it's land base. An added benefit of this is the tribe's ability to purchase culturally significant properties. A prime example of this it a farm formerly known as Feruson fields. This farm has a large mound and is considered the first Cherokee village- the Mother Town.

The "Ferguson Fields" property has recently been re-aquired by the tribe. This is the site of what we consider to be the "mother town" of all Cherokees. A large mound still exists here. The Yonagusta/Kituhwa Cultural Center resides on a hill just to the north of the site.

As well as being able to protect and preserve this culturally significant site, the propert also is utilized for numerous other activities of benefit to tribal members. Since being purchased by the tribe some of the property has been set aside for tribal members to plant garden plots of upto one acre in size. There is also a model airplane (radio-controlled) flying field. A model airplane flying club had built a facility on the property and that facility is still being maintained and is open to tribal members.
