GENERAL EVENTS  

Cherokee Elementary School Math and Literacy Night.  Mar. 11 from 6-7pm at the following sites:  Big Cove Community Center, Birdtown Community Center, and the Ginger Lynn Welch Center.    

Cherokee Breakfast Club.  Mar. 12 at 7am at the Holiday Inn – Cherokee.  All Cherokee speakers and those interested in the Cherokee Language are invited to attend.  Ka-li-s-da-yv-nv-ga No-le, I-ni-wo-ni-hi

Gospel Singing.  Mar. 13 at 5pm at the Cherokee High School auditorium.  Hosted by the Freedom Heirs of Georgia, this event is free and donations will be accepted for the Cherokee High School Student Assistance Program.  Featured singers include:  Freedom Heirs, 3 or More 4 Jesus, Skeeter Hindman, The Schofields, and others. 

United by Grace Revival.  Mar. 14. On Johnson Branch Road.  Info:  488-9726

Wrights Creek Baptist Church Revival.  Mar. 15 at 7pm.  Tony Lambert will be preaching and everyone is invited to attend. 

Tribal Law & Jurisdiction Forum.  Mar. 18 from 6-8pm at the Old Cherokee High School Auditorium.  Who has jurisdiction over non-enrolled people on the Qualla Boundary?  How does tribal differ from state and federal law?  A panel of some of the top authorities on tribal law and jurisdiction will meet to answer these questions and yours.  Info:  Dawn Russell (828) 788-2106 or Angela Wolfe (828) 736-7559

Cherokee Tribal Child Care Services Open House.  Mar. 19 from 1-3pm.  Everyone is invited to drop by and see the new renovations. 

Parent/Child Pottery Workshop.  Mar. 20 from 9am – 4pm at the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, Inc.  This workshop for children ages 6-12 will be taught by EBCI tribal member Bernadine George and is free, but space is limited to only 15 slots.  A reservation is required to participate.  Info or to reserve a space: Tonya Carroll (828) 497-3103

Rock Hill Church Revival.  Mar. 22-27 starting at 7pm every night.  The guest speaker will be Kenny Webb from Sevierville, Tenn. and there will be special singing every nice.  Pastor Red Woodard invites all.  The church is located at #10 Rock Hill Church Road across from Jenkins Grocery in Cherokee. 

ESS Parent Support Group.  Mar. 23 from 5:30-7pm at the Cherokee Elementary School Hope Center area.  This support meeting for the parents of children with special needs will begin with a dinner followed by an informational meeting.  Please bring a side dish to share.  The main dish, drinks, plates, utensils and dessert will be provided.  Child care (ages 3-10) will be available if children are registered by Mar. 22.  Appropriate age activities with supervision will be provided for older children.  Please park in the Elementary School parking lot and staff will be available to guide you to the Hope Center.  Info: Kathy Norris 554-5074. 

2010 Census Road Tour Event.  Mar. 24 from 2-4pm in the parking lot across from the Ginger Lynn Welch Complex.  Free hot dogs, free give-aways and interactive and educational materials relating to the 2010 Census. 

Vietnam Veterans Events.  Mar. 27, a parade will be held at the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds at 9:30am and a special ceremony will be held there at 1pm.  Info:  Janice Wildcatt 497-8122. 

Yellowhill Indian Ball Team Organizational Meeting.  Mar. 27 at 10am at the Yellowhill Community Building.  For those, ages 14 and up, interested in playing Cherokee Indian Ball for Yellowhill, you’re invited to attend to discuss forming a team for the community. 

Take Back the Night.  April 29 at 5pm in the Cherokee Visitors Center parking lot.  Take Back the Night is a sexual assault awareness event and honors survivors of sexual violence and abuse.  A short, educational walk will start in the parking lot as part of the event. 

HEALTH/SPORTS 

Tee Ball, Coach Pitch & Little League Sign-ups.  Being held now through March. 12.  This is for ages 5-12.  Practice will start the week of March 15.  Little League is fast-pitch softball for girls and baseball for boys.  Sign-up at the following locations:  Birdtown Gym 554-6890, Big Cove Gym 497-7171, Painttown Gym 497-3345, or Wolfetown Gym 497-4728.

Blood Drives in Cherokee Area.  March 15 from 11:30am – 1:30pm at Smokey Mountain Elementary School.  This event is being held in loving memory of Ms. Privette.  Info:  497-5535.  March 25 from 9am – 1:30pm at the Cherokee Indian Hospital.  Info:  497-9163, ext. 6498. 

Car Seat Clinic at Snowbird Complex.  Mar. 16 from 8:30am – 4:30pm.  Healthy Cherokee/Injury Prevention is sponsoring the clinic.  Please bring your child, EBCI enrollment card for child and a $20 fee for the seat.  Info or to schedule an appointment: 497-7460

NAYO Qualifier Basketball Tournament.   March 20 (note date change) at the Snowbird Gym.  The deadline to enter is Friday, March 12 at 3pm.  To enter a team, call (828) 479-6178. 

Wellbriety Celebration.  Mar. 20 at 1pm at the Cherokee Indian Fairgrounds.  Welcome the first day of spring, the direction of the East and the Promise of New Beginnings.  Celebrate a clean and sober lifestyle.  Tobacco Ceremony, Honoring of the Warriors by the Steve Youngdeer Post Elders, door prizes, food on the grill, speakers, drums, and more.  Local vendors welcome.  Info: Beverly Griffin 788-3452

Soccer – National E License.  Mar. 26-28 at Tuscola High School.  Any individual 16 years or older is eligible.  $75 for NCYSA members and $85 for non-members.  Info:  Stan Georgiev 593-8280

3-on-3 Basketball Fundraiser.  Mar. 27 at the Birdtown Gym with on-site sign up from 9-10am.  Indian Taco Dinners will be available in the concession from 11am – 2pm.  The tournament and dinners are sponsored by the Junior Class of Cherokee High School with proceeds raised to be used for prom expenses.  $35/team with a 4-person roster, divisions:  Mens and Womens, Middle School (grade 6-8), High School (grades 9-12) and Adult.  Tournament will begin at 11am.  Info:  Aaron Hogner (828) 554-5030

Turning Point Program.  Mar. 29 is the deadline for enrollment is this free 8-week program, developed by Cherokee Choices, providing a fun way for families to learn how to eat healthy and increase physical activity for a lifetime.  This is for children ages 8-12 and full participation in program activities by the child and parent (or caregiver) is required.  Info:  Yvette Rivera Colmant 497-1978, Tara McCoy 497-1976, or Robin Callahan 497-1975.

15th Annual Indians in Sobriety Campout.  May 13-16 at the KOA Kampground on Big Cove Road in Cherokee.  Activities will begin Thursday, May 13 at noon with daily AA and ALANON speakers and a pow wow Saturday afternoon with host drum – All Nations Warrior Society.  Info:  Jill 736-9068

BENEFITS/FUNDRAISERS

Benefit Dinner.  Mar. 11 at the Wolfetown Gym.  The 828 Boyz Basketball Team will be selling BBQ Dinners which  will include a BBQ sandwich, slaw, baked beans, dessert, and a drink for $7.00.  Please call 497-4728 for deliveries.

Benefit .  Mar. 19 at Melinda Bigwitch’s residence on Blue Wing Road.  Dinners include Beanbread, fried chicken, fried potatoes, cabbage, green beans, fatback and a dessert of banana pudding or sweetcorn w/ walnuts and a drink.  To place order call 497-0135.

CHS Travel Club Yard Sale.  Mar. 20 from 7:30am – 12pm at the Cherokee High School Lobby.  Proceeds will go to help the students pay for their trip to Paris in April.

American Legion Post 143 – meets the third Monday of each month at 1900 hours at the Post Hall. 

Smoky Mountain Cherokee Chamber of Commerce  – meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 1185 Tsali Road at the log cabin next to the Newfound Lodge.  Info: 497-6700.  

Cherokee Kiwanis Club – meet every Wednesday at 11:30am at the Prime Sirloin Steakhouse. 

Cherokee Lions Club – meets every first and third Thursday of the month at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall at the Cherokee United Methodist Church.  

Cherokee Rotary Club – meets each Tuesday at 12pm at Myrtle’s Table at Best Western. 

Cherokee School Board – meets the first and third Monday of each month at 4:30pm in the Administration Conference Room located at the Cherokee Central School Administration Building.  Meetings are open to the public.
